En écoutant l'ouverture de Devotional Hymns, on aura vite fait d'imaginer qu'on est ici dans une simple continuité de The nectar of perversity. Il n'en est rien. "and thou shall breath..." est en réalité le point de départ d'une invocation — réussie — de l'enfer. Mories déploie un arsenal de sons terrifiants pour nous faire vibrer avec les ténèbres. Pas de black metal survolté mais, au contraire, un rythme plus lent ("the ravenous bloodlust...") qui transmet une chaleur volcanique et satanique.
